ALISON STREETER (QUEEN OF THE ENGLISH CHANNEL)
Surrey, England

A Watery Eos

It’s Dark
port light rocks on my right
Ferries glide by either side like Blackpool illuminations
Invariably the small hours invoke intense solitude
My friend , the moon casts its silvery shadow on the rippling surface
I watch delighted as bubbles of phosphorus dance with my fingers
Then surface
Every armstroke counts in the relentless quest for a hidden shore
More excited bubbles as I smack the water in determination
They don’t seem so bright now as a horizon forms
I feel smug and snug in my watery playground
Glimpsing bodies escorting me layered up and shivering
A reddish tint appears long before the sun
No sign of Shepherds furrowing their brows
But when the dividing line is broken by the yellow orb
Colour explodes sky to sea
Eos has delivered something special
So I forge on with renewed strength.
